Karla Boluk is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. Using a critical lens, Karla’s scholarship investigates how tourism may be a mechanism to empower communities involved in and/or directly affected by tourism. As such, her research examines how tourism may contribute to sustainable social change. General areas of interest include ethical/responsible consumption, sustainable production, volunteer tourism, social entrepreneurship and creative pedagogies facilitating critical thinking.

She is currently editing a Special Issue entitled “Critical thinking to realize sustainability in tourism systems: reflecting on the 2030 sustainable development goals” for the Journal of Sustainable Tourism. Her research program overlaps with many of the SDGs although she is particularly interested in SDG 4 “Quality Education” because she believes it holds the potential to solve many of the SDGs.
