Heidi van der Watt  (conference organiser) is a PhD candidate in the Institute of Development Studies at Massey University.  Her PhD research concerns the effects of marine wildlife tourism on sustainable development for local people in Gansbaai, South Africa, and specifically the contribution to SDG4, SDG8, SDG11, SDG12 and SDG14.

Heidi has worked with destinations, businesses, destination organisations and place management authorities in 12 countries, assisting to plot their sustainability journeys.  Her publications include “Developing Tourism in South Africa” 2nd ed (Oxford University Press, 2004),  and several chapters and case studies with Juta and OUP.  She is the founder of Better Tourism Africa, an NPO advocating the principles of the 2002 Cape Town Declaration and secretariat for the Sustainable Tourism Certification Alliance Africa. She , and the African Responsible Tourism Awards.  She has served as director of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council since 2012.
